What We Do: Classes & Schedule
Every Project Create class is taught by a professional artist with an arts education background and/or professional experience. This year we are able to offer 24 courses in the visual and performing arts over 2 semesters (spring/fall). Classes meet weekly at one of our six participating locations.

Girard Street Family Shelter
Photography at Girard combines digital and traditional photographic practices. Students complete projects that incorporate alternative photographic techniques include experimental darkroom practices and camera-less photographic experiments.

Visual Arts – Flipbook Animation

Independence Place (SOME Place for Kids)
Students will learn the basics for creating mini flipbooks and stop action animations in small groups. Starting with simple drawings, students will be able to create the illusion of motion in a fun flipbook that will become a video short. Lastly, students will also work on character development and create a dynamic narrative to enhance the story’s plot.

Students will be encouraged to express their ideas through the exploration of various mediums, including tempera, watercolor, textile, paper and clay. Lessons are designed to strengthen student’s creative and social skills by encouraging inventive thinking while producing both two- and three-dimensional art.

African Dance & Drumming

Hope Apartments
Students learn various techniques for dancing and drumming based on traditional African styles. Students will learn the importance of warm-up, conversation, and eating healthy for a holistic learning experience. Additionally, alongside learning basic dancing and drumming skills, students will make traditional African musical instruments.

Theatre Improvisation

During this class, students will be introduced to rules and elements of improvisation. Students will be introduced to space work and will break down and discuss elements of improv. Students will continue to build their physical and vocal skills through improvised scene work, as well as their partnership skills.

The goal of this class is to teach respect, discipline, positive self-esteem, teamwork, sportsmanship, healthy eating, encouragement, and having fun through the Martial Arts. The techniques that are taught come from a combination of forms Karate, Taekwondo, Muay Thai, and Boxing.

Hip-Hop Dance

Each class starts with proper warm-up technique and stretching. Students go into “across the floor” where they line up and are introduced to basic hip hop movements and are instructed to repeat it one by one across the floor to the other side. They must follow the beat and rhythm of the music while repeating the movements.

Stand-up Comedy

Students will begin to explore and identify their Point of View. We will discuss and explore joke structure, the mechanics of microphone use, and the importance of constructive feedback. We will discuss the importance of ensemble and group support in the classroom and how to choose topics for each students set.

The objective of this course is focused on exposing the learners to tools and materials that may be used to create three-dimensional works of art. The goal is to expand the learners’ self knowledge and understanding about relationships of objects, materials, math and geometry, tools and design. We will use paper, metal, wood and clay.

Students will learn and demonstrate technical photography skills and incorporate contemporary information and themes into their photographs. Students will demonstrate these skills by completing various projects that incorporate photographic techniques and relate to the issues or topics in the community and personal reflection.
