Project Create Community Partnership Programs

Project Create’s longest-standing program includes weekly multidisciplinary arts education classes taught by experienced teaching artists in partnership with community-based organizations that provide services to children, youth and families experiencing homelessness and poverty. Partners include housing providers, low-income/Section 8 housing, community centers, Department of Parks and Recreation, DC Public Libraries, DC Public and Public Charter Schools, mentorship organizations, and more.

Semester-long courses, designed with a therapeutic and trauma-informed approach, include weekly classes, arts enrichment field trips, and performance and exhibition opportunities for children and youth of all ages. Our experienced teaching artists and art therapists represent a diverse range of artistic disciplines. All of our teaching artists go through a series of professional development trainings to provide high-quality activities.

What We Offer

Project Create offers unique opportunities to create art and develop important life skills at the same time. At Project Create, we:

  • Tailor our programming to the unique needs and goals of our partner organization;
  • Focus our programming on serving children, youth, and families who are experiencing homelessness and/or live in high-poverty DC neighborhoods;
  • Offer weekly therapeutic and trauma-informed art sessions in any discipline;
  • Provide arts enrichment field trips; and
  • Ensure participant responses inform future program plans.

Here are some examples of Project Create classes:

Movement and Dance: Participants learn movement-based activities that help strengthen bonds, explore new modes of self-expression, and build confidence.

Music: Through sound and rhythm improvisations as skill-building exercises, participants explore ways they can use their voice and body to create various sounds.

Photography and Videography: Participants go beyond taking snapshots to develop their creativity and awareness through the art and science of photography.

Theater & Improv: Participants learn techniques to successfully portray characters and have the opportunity to apply this knowledge to acting assignments performed in class.

Visual Arts: Participants have access to a wide range of inspiring materials and a variety of ways to explore them, including drawing, painting, collage, clay, sculpture and other mixed media.
