Visual Arts, Graphic Design and Theater
I am your Teaching Artist Nia J. Mays. I came to the DMV area 5 years ago but I am originally from Long Island, New York.
I have been pursuing my own art dreams since I can remember. At 5 years old I started singing and performing with my mom in the church choir. After that, I never stopped.
As time went on I started working on at least three shows a year for the past 10 years.
Over the course of the years, I learned how to paint, write, build sets, sing, dance, direct, devise, light scenes, and act. I not only had to practice and practice but I also had to listen to my teachers along the way.
My teachers helped me become a better, more serious and dedicated artist and they helped me use art to relieve stress and inspire others.
Now I get to do the same thing… I came to Project Create in 2022 and I have worked every season since!
I am certified in Special Education and currently work as a DCPS educator. I use modern social-emotional learning, and responsive-teaching methods to keep every student engaged, inspired, and creating.
I have my BA from American University in Theater and Business Administration. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in Special Education at Johns Hopkins University.
